Many varieties are known. Dark red was popular in the 1920s. Flappers wore it to symbolize their independence. It was worn around to form a ‘Cupid's bow’, inspired by actress Clara Bow. At that time, it was acceptable to apply it in public and during lunch, but never at dinner. In the early 1930s, Elizabeth Arden began to introduce different colors. She inspired other companies to create a variety of shades and it was seen as symbol of adult. Teenage girls believed that it was a symbol of womanhood. In the mid 1940s, several teen books and magazines stressed that men prefer a natural look over a made up look. Books and magazines also warned girls that wearing cosmetics could ruin their chances of popularity and a career. The implication of these articles was that rouge was for teen girls who acted very provocatively with men.Black became popular in the late 1970s and into the 1990s. In the 1950s, black had been worn by actresses starring in horror films. It became popular again due in part to punk and goth subcultures. In the mid-1980s, so-called mood were sold to adults by mainstream cosmetic companies. This type changes colors after it is applied, based on changes in skin's pH that supposedly reflect the wearer's mood. They had resurgence in the very early 21st century, offered by inexpensive as well as more exclusive cosmetic lines, and color changing chemicals also appeared in lipgloss, such as Smashbox, and blush, such as Stila Custom Color Blush. In the 1990s, colors became semi-matte. Shades of brown were very popular. These shades were inspired by several shows such as ‘Friends’. In the late 1990s and into the 21st century, pearl shades became very popular. They were no longer matte or semi-matte, they were shiny and contained several interference pearls.Lip gloss is a product used primarily to give lips a glossy lustre and sometimes subtle color. It is distributed as a liquid or a soft solid (not to be confused with balm, which generally has medicinal or soothing purposes). It can be completely clear, translucent, or various shades of opacity, including frosted, glittered, glassy, and metallic finishes. It comes in a variety of forms and may be applied in different ways. It can be contained in a small cylindrical bottle and applied with a rounded or sloped applicator wand (known as a doefoot applicator) or with a built in brush. Or it can come in a small, soft, squeezable plastic tube designed to be passed over the lips or applied with a fingertip or brush. Solid or semisolid glosses come in boxes and tubes and sometimes blur the distinction between lip gloss and balm.New types of ‘plumping’ lipgloss contain ingredients that make them appear softer and plumper. Gloss is often used when a person wants to have some color, but does not want an intense, solid color effect. It is also often used as a sort of introduction to makeup. It is often used by preteen and young teenage girls who want to wear some, but are too young to wear more intense colors.
